Homemade Oat Milk

YOU ARE T(OAT)ALLY GOING TO LOVE THIS ONE!

Plant milks are taking the wellness world by storm & oat milk is definitely the front runner right now! With so many options out there as a dairy-free replacement or cows milk, it can be tough to choose the right one, know which is the best tasting & the best for your health.

I have been drinking dairy-free milks for years. Ever since food allergies cropped up in my family when I was in college & even due to preference before then… I’ve been on the dairy free drink train. Just like any wellness trendy item, dairy-free milk products can be deceptively labeled as “healthy” but after looking through the food labels, their true colors (& additives) shine through.

In order to create the same mouth-feel, frothiness, taste & overall look as regular milk, many products have additives, preservatives & other fillers tossed in! Peek on the back of the oat milk you already have in the fridge — check out what’s in there. The list can range from the few simple ingredients it takes to whip these milks to a whole slew of gums & proteins. More on that another day — let’s focus on making your own!

Oat milk is SUPER simple to make, only takes a handful ingredients (only TWO if you want to keep it super basic) & is way cheaper than picking up a container from the fridge at the grocery. Only downside? It can be a little messy! Be extra careful when straining the pulp out — it’s taken me a few practice runs to NOT end up with oat milk all over my counter.

But if you’re looking for a simple, easy & t(oat)ally clean dairy-free milk to keep on hand —this is it! Scroll for the recipe & let’s get milking!

Homemade Oat Milk

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 4 cups

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 c rolled oats

  • 4 c filtered water

Optional:

  • 1-2 Tbsp. maple syrup

  • 1 tsp. cinnamon

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Combine all ingredients into a high speed blender.

  2. Blend at a high speed for 3-5 minutes until all oats are pulverized. Mixture will look very frothy.

  3. Using a cheese cloth over a large bowl, carefully pour blended oats into the cheese cloth. Gather into a bag shape & squeeze the liquids out of the mixture, wringing it out into the bowl. *This step can get super messy! Do what works best for you! I poured a small amount at a time, squeezed out the milk & repeated until it was all done!

  4. Store milk in an airtight jar or container for 7-10 days.

  5. Enjoy!
